Congratulations to CBW Gospel Music Camp on a successful grant application!

The CBW Gospel Music Camp's "goal and mission is to transfer to future generations, the rich heritage of the African-American experience and how it has contributed to our society and the world. This is done through a developed curriculum along with individuals sharing their experiences in gospel, jazz and blues. This summer camp is provided to students 10-18 years of age. The fundamental curriculum is developed and taught by Dr. John Hildreth, Professor of Music, Augustana College. Other classes include, spoken word, poetry, and dance, taught by professional clinicians. Students receive hands on experiences with musical instruments to discover possible hidden talents and interests; and learn preservation of an historical art form and heritage that is not currently being passed on to future generations. Music is a universal language. Much can be learned about a people, their culture and history through the study of their music."

This camp is an outreach program created by the Westbrook Singers, a Gospel Music group that started in the 1970s. Following are excerpts from a Quad City Times article from May 15, 2017 written by Deirdre Cox Baker in conversation with Delores Tingle, member of the original group, and one of the leaders of the camp. Tingle says:

"The youth camp is a labor of love. It's an extension of what we love to do, and to share our experiences of how we learned about music. Gospel music has a history, and it's tied to the African-American culture, from spirituals, through the Civil Rights era and beyond. There is a fusion between Gospel music and the blues, as well as jazz music. All of this is correlated. There are a lot of hymns, and songs, that are going away, and we need to take the initiative to teach the children. We want them to be able to hear, and appreciate the music." https://bit.ly/2PCnCxq
